Reading and Writing Activities for the Classroom

Enchanted Learning This is a MEGA site for online activities.  This link will take you to their site map which lists everything that is on their site.  Materials for K-4 can be found.  They have an extensive map, animals and alphabet section.  Their printable worksheets are easy to read and are appropriately designed for the grade they are listed under.

Comenius Fluency Through Fables This site provides fables for student to read and then various quizzes for them to take afterward.

  • Have students read one of the stories and then take a quiz.  When the quiz results page comes up when their quiz is finished have students print it out and turn it in.  Voila!  Already grade assessments

Fake Out!  This vocabulary site is graded into three levels:  K-2, 3-5 and 6-8.  It provides a "word of the day".  Students guess the definition of the word.

  • Bookmark this site.  Use it as a part of your Daily Oral Language.

Power Proofreading  This site contains activities for grades 2-8.  Students correct passages by clicking on mistakes and then typing in the correct word or punctuation.

  • Use it as a group project for Daily Oral Language.
  • Use it for individual student review or assessment.

SuperKids Vocabulary Builders This site contains 4 vocabulary games:  Hangman,  WHATWord and TextTwist.  (Note:  These games are available to play at gamehouse.com but have ads all over the place.  The link through superkids does not have the heavy advertisement displays.  You can also purchase these games from gamehouse.com)

  • Most of these games can fall under the "making words" block of the 4 block literacy model.  Use them for individual student practice.
  • TextTwist:  Have students write down their words and compare them against your answers or the computer's answers (shown when game is over)

virtual alphabet This site will probably be most useful for K-1.  It has a song (the tune is usually one that you'll know like "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star") that focuses on each letter of the alphabet.  There are also links to topics that start with that letter as well.  For example:  The Letter M features the song "Monty Moose" sung to the tune of "It's a Small World" and has website links for moose, migration and M&Ms.

Wacky Web Tales  Remember MadLibs?  This is the online version.  The site recommends use by grades 3 and up.  Some of the stories would probably work for 2nd grade.

  • Students can create an assigned Wacky Web Tale, print it and turn it in.  Usually students are asked to insert 5-15 words.
  • Use during Daily Oral Language to create class stories.
  • Students LOVE to share their silly stories with others.  Be careful!  These web tales are addictive!

FunBrain Word Games

  • These games give students a final score at the end.  You can use this score as a grade.  Have them print out their results page and turn it in or save paper and just jot down the score in your gradebook as each student finishes.  Be sure to preview the games before you assign them.
  • You can also by a membership at FunBrain and create your own online quizzes and the computer will add game scores to those and computer grades for you.  I've used this and loved it!
