Red Ribbon Week was celebrated at Richwoods with a rock and roll attitude. Students and teachers celebrated living a drug free lifestyle with the theme “iTune Out Drugs”. Guitars and music notes filled the hallways and hung from the stair wells. In the lower grades, classroom doors displayed clever renditions of nursery rhymes with a drug free twist. Band and choir members created their own iPods with drug-free playlists.
On Monday students and teachers sported wild and crazy hair for “Heavy Metal Hair Day”. “Let’s Band Together Against Drugs” was the theme for Tuesday and students donned headbands and bandanas to show their drug free spirit. On Wednesday students got “T’d Off” about drugs and wore their favorite band t-shirts. The halls were filled with blue on Thursday as students and staff wore blue to remind others that drugs give you the “blues”. Friday was “Rockin’ Red” day. Thanks to a generous donation from the IESI Landfill, students were given a rockin’ red t-shirt that read “My School Rocks Drug Free”.
Our Red Ribbon Week assembly gave students an opportunity to rock out by performing the songs “I Will D.A.R.E” and “Drug Free Me”. In addition to singing and dancing students won dozens of prizes! Microphones, bracelets and inflatable guitars were some of the prizes that students won for demonstrating their drug-free pride. A highlight of the assembly was our special guests from the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. They brought goggles that simulated what drinking too much alcohol can do to your senses. Students had a great time learning about making good choices concerning drugs and alcohol.
Congratulations to the library for winning the door decorating contest sponsored by the music department. The winners of the hallway decorating contest were classrooms in the K-2 hallway. They won a special plaque to display in their hallway.
Red Ribbon Week began as a way to memorialize the death of a drug enforcement agent and raise awareness for the prevention of substance abuse. Today, Red Ribbon Week brings millions of people together to raise awareness regarding the need for alcohol, tobacco and other drug and violence prevention, early intervention, and treatment services. It is the largest, most visible prevention awareness campaign observed annually in the United States.
