Pilot Grove C-4 Course Descriptions

SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT

Geography (Required)
Prerequisite: None
Grade– 9, 10, 11, 12
Emphasizes the way geography affects people living in various regions of the world. Physical and cultural aspects of each region will be studied. Basic geographic concepts are stressed. Geographic regions studied will include North America, The Middle East, Asia and the Pacific. (1 Unit)

World History (Required)
Prerequisite: None
Grade– 10, 11, 12
Tells man’s story from pre-history to the present. Both European and non-European topics will be covered. Topics will include Greece and Rome, the Middle Ages, Colonialism, World War I and World War II. (1/2 Unit)

American History (Required)
Prerequisites: None
Grade– 11, 12
A study of social, economic and political happenings in America since 1840. Topics will include the Civil War, Industrialism, World War I and II, the Roaring 20’s and the Depression. Current events will also be analyzed. Individuals discussed will include Lincoln, Wilson, Roosevelt, Kennedy, and many others. Students should gain a better understanding of modern American life. (1 Unit)

American Government (Required)
Prerequisites: None
Grade-12
A study of the process and structure of our government with particular attention given to the federal level. Citizenship will be discussed and current events will be used to make the subject more relevant. Units on Missouri government will also be included. (1/2 Unit)

Contemporary Issues (Weighted)
Prerequisite: B or better in World History, or consent of instructor.
Grade-12
Designed to explore some of the ideas in American History. Topics covered will include criminal justice, Vietnam protests, futuristic nuclear war, immigration, consumerism, media coverage of news. The course is planned as a discussion course. (1/2 Unit)

Missouri History (Elective)
Prerequisite: None
Grade– 12
A study of the history of the state from prehistory to the present. Topics include: early exploration, slavery and the Civil War, and Harry Truman. Designed to help students understand their state and the major role it has played in the history of the U.S. When possible, local history, guest speakers, and field trips will be used. (1/2 Unit)
