Pilot Grove C-4 Course Descriptions
MATH DEPARTMENT
Algebra I
Prerequisite: A score equivalent to a C or better on the Iowa Algebra Test
Grades: 9, 10, 11 ,12
Designed for the college bound student. Includes topics such as
polynomials , solving equations, inequalities and graphing. (1 Unit)
Algebra A
Prerequisite: Consent of the Instructor
Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12,
Algebra A is designed for the student seeking a slower paced curriculum.
Algebra A is the first half of a curriculum that will cover all topics from
Algebra I. Some of the topics included in algebra A are number operations,
solving equations, data and probability. (1 Unit)
Algebra B
Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra A or Consent of the Instructor
Grades: 10, 11, 12
Algebra B is the second half of a curriculum that will cover topics from Algebra
I. Some of the topics included in Algebra B are simplifying and factoring
polynomials, graphing one variable and two variables and a preview of
measurement and geometric concepts. (1 Unit)
Algebra II
(Weighted)
Prerequisite: Algebra I or consent of instructor
Grades: 10, 11, 12
A continuation and extension of the topics studied in Algebra I. Some of the
topics included are equation and inequalities, graphs of linear equations ,
factoring of polynomial, and solving quadratic equations. Rational, irrational
and complex numbers will be studied. Study of geometry is helpful but not
required for success in Algebra II. (1 Unit)
Geometry
Prerequisite: Algebra I or consent of instructor
Grades: 11, 12
A study of plane figures and their characteristics such as the relationships of
angles formed by parallel lines cut by a transversal; the four center points of
a triangle determined by the medians, altitudes, angle bisectors and segment
bisectors; and characteristics of parallelograms, rectangles, squares and
rhombi. Circles will also be studied. Coordinate geometry will used along with
plane geometry. Emphasis will be placed on using geometry theorem to solve
problems. Logical thinking skills will be practiced and students will learn to
write formal two-column proofs.( 1 Unit)
Pre-Calculus (Weighted)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Algebra II and Geometry is recommended or
Consent of the Instructor
Grades: 11, 12
A continuation and extension of topics studies in Algebra II. A review of
functions and their graphs will be included. The content will include the
fundamental theorem of Algebra, the discriminate of a quadratic equation,
exponential and logarithmic functions, and combinations and probability.
Applications of mathematics will be emphasized. (1 Unit)
