MUSIC New
This year "Guitar Class".
We have three great students who are learning to play the guitar and are
having a great time. Hopefully they will be ready to play for the upcoming
Christmas Concert. Do
you want to learn an new instrument? Contact Mrs.
Sword and setup lessons. The
Elementary students are off and running learning about music and how it
fits into their daily lives and how books take us on great
destinations. Book
Fair The
Book fair theme for November is "Book Fair destination". Look for
more information
about how to help provide great books for your students classroom on the
school library web page. The
library is open before school from 7:00 am - 7:45 am Mondays, Tuesdays and
Fridays and Wednesday evening from 4:00 to 5:30 pm for anyone to come and
read books, magazines and use the computers. Characterplus Characterplus
- Trait for
September
is "Respect" keep your eyes on the characterplus
webpage for details and upcoming activities for Characterplus. Please talk to your students about
"respect" and how it effects your life
and
those
around you. Thanks Mrs.
Sword Math This
year has started with the students becoming familiar with the MAP or EOC
test they will be taking near the end of the year. The good news is
several of the classes thought the example test were easier than they
expected. All of the classes, except for the Seniors will be taking some form of the
tests. Another
change this year is that I have provided a Pacing Guide for the classes.
Junior High and Algebra I are completed for the time up until they take
the MAP or EOC test. Geometry and Algebra II are for the first nine weeks.
This way the students can look to see what our objective is for each week
and you as parents will know as well. We are
starting off the year with the basics of numbers and will build from
there. If you have any questions please feel free to call me at school or
to email at pyarick@humer8.k12.mo.us, I’ll
do my best to answer your questions. Pam Yarick Science
News The most amazing things for
the students as they enter the Science room for the first time back from
summer break is that they can actually see tops of my desks and the lab
tables. But it won’t be long and once again their assignments and projects
will be covering every surface available. The Biology students will soon
(Sept 11) be turning in their leaf collections
and the Physical Science students will be bringing in their Most Wanted
Scientist posters. The
Chemistry students will be beginning the monumental task of conquering Sig
Figs while the ABC (Applied Biology and Chemistry) class will enjoy taste
testing some skittles for a recent job they have contracted. The Eighth graders will soon begin
transpiration experiments while the seventh graders will refresh their
graphing skills with the use of m&m’s. And
last, but not least, the sixth graders will soon be blowing bubbles as
they dive in to inquiry. Carrie Sutcliffe

Fourth
and Fifth Grade News We
have had a great start to the school year. There are 7 students in fourth
grade and 9 in fifth grade. The students have been very busy
reviewing and getting to know each other. Since this is my first year in
Hume, the students and staff have been very helpful. We are focusing on
building a “team” concept that promotes respect, pride and
politeness. By maintaining
this concept, the students are going to succeed. We are keeping journals. These journals will assist them in
sentence structure, spelling and penmanship. We will be starting DARE shortly
after Labor Day. This year
the DARE officer will be teaching both 4th and 5th
grades. Kirk
