The = Hume R-VIII School District is committed to preparing students to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. We believe it is necess= ary for children to recognize that a free society can not survive unless the va= lues upon which it is grounded are fully comprehended and practiced by each succ= eeding generation of educated citizens. The board recognizes that there exists wit= hin our community a set of core values which are common to all cultures. For th= ese reasons, we believe it is necessary to have a commitment to the intentional instruction about character development. To achieve this, the Hume R-VIII School District pro= motes efforts toward personal growth, responsible citizenship, and the knowledge = and skills necessary to be successful.

 

CHARACTERplus = encourages our students to reach those characteristics of an ideal graduate by focusin= g on character education strategies each day for every individual. The characteristics are taught from birth through the 12th grade in = all aspects of the school setting. These preserve our freedom and civil heritag= e, enhance academic excellence, and promote good citizenship.

 

The district recognizes the home as the primary source= of moral, ethical, and religious instruction; the role of the school is to sup= port the family by upholding the highest example of morality, ethics, and integr= ity. A policy on character development is for the benefit of all students and is written with respect and sensitivity to the diversity of religions, culture= s, creeds, and beliefs.
