Those students selected as finalists are expected to participate in an on-campus competition which will take place March 12 to March 14. Washington and Lee pays the travel expenses for all finalists. In addition to the George Washington Honor Scholarship Program, Washington and Lee University is involved in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. All accepted students who are named National Merit Finalist, and who designate W&L as their first choice school, are eligible to receive a Washington and Lee National Merit award of at least $750. Again, this is a four year renewable award as long as a cumulative 3.0 grade point average is maintained.

Students must be nominated for the award. High school seniors from the U.S. and its territories are eligible to be nominated. The foundation accepts nominations on annual basis from people directly familiar with the nominee's service, such as community leaders, service providers, teachers, school principals, and/or members of the clergy.
