What does The Friends of Elsberry Literacy do for the learners in the community?

Elsberry, Missouri, founded in 1879 and known for its most famous citizen U. S. Congressman Clarence Cannon, sits in agricultural country approximately 60 miles from St. Louis.

Because of our rural location and financial support from only small businesses, our local learners rely solely upon the efforts of the Elsberry R-II School District.

Parents and community members are generous and caring yet limited by the area's $14,600 per capita income.  (In comparison, St. Peters - only 30 miles down the road - is supported by a $23,000 per capita income rate.)

Our school district's 830 students enjoy the community's support, but 43% of them are living at or below poverty level.
