7th Grade Enrichment

As the 7th grade enrichment project, each student will construct a quilt top.  The students chose this project as a memento of Avenue City School.  I need each student to choose a fabric that represents himself or herself.  Cotton materials wear very well.  Loosely woven fabric will unravel and will not wear well.  All students will bring this fabric to class and I will cut it into blocks.  Then, the students will trade blocks so that each quilt will have a block representing each class member. To finish the needed 20 blocks, we will have a signature block and a class photo block.  We plan on beginning this project the first semester of school, so please send the materials as soon as you purchase them.

Each student will also need to purchase fabric for the sashing between blocks.  Keep in mind that the sashing will be next to each student block.  In the past very small prints and geometric shapes, or tone-on-tone materials have worked well.  Bright colors tend to “pop” and make attractive quilts.  For the sashing strips, prints that are too large do not look good when cut.  I may be asking for help rotary cutting the blocks since I will need to cut hundreds of pieces.

When the quilt tops are completed the students will need a fabric back and batting.  In the past, students have used a soft blanket as the backing and have not used batting.  If you wish to use a blanket, you will not have to have the batting.  We will tie the quilt, or you may choose to quilt it.  This is a year-long project, so it will not be completed until the end of the year.

Supply List:  The first 3 items are needed ASAP.

Focus Fabric representing the student: 2 yards

Sashing Fabric:  2 ˝ yards (this will also be used to border the quilt)

Binding Fabric:  ˝ yard (may match the sashing fabric or contrast it for an extra pop of color)

Easiest Backing:  If you wish to purchase a blanket for the back, a full size blanket will be fine as long as it is at least 80” x 68”.  You could look to purchase these when they go on sale since we won’t be using them yet.  Please do not send the blankets to school until we have the tops completed.

If you prefer to use material and batting for the back, please purchase 4 yds. of each.  For fleece, you may wish to not use batting also. You could look to purchase these when they go on sale since we won’t be using them yet.  Please do not send the backing materials to school until we have the tops completed.

I know this is confusing for non-quilters, so please call me if you need help.
