Avenue City Elementary School

Outstanding Board Member of the Year—Kevin Salmons

Kevin Salmons has spent the last thirteen years serving his community and school as a School Board member working to improve and support the Avenue City R-IX School District. Even before his election to the school board, Mr. Salmons was a strong supporter of this school district, for he actually started his school career at Avenue City R-IX as a student.

Mr. Salmons is a leader in his community as well as being voted a leader on the Avenue City Board of Education serving as the board President for 9 years. During his tenure as a board member, Kevin has helped lead the school serving on several committees. His involvement with the building committee helped guide the success of a bond issue elections, which allowed for the construction of the district’s latest addition in 1998. Serving on the district technology committee for nine-years’ helped provide the vision of a strong technology program in a small, rural setting. Serving on the districts CSIP committee has helped the district through two successful MSIP reviews allowing the district to be honored with “Accredited with Distinction” status.

One of his fellow board members comments that Kevin is a model board member. He is always open to new ideas; he is thoughtful and respectfully listens to issues brought before the board. His goal is to always provide the best possible learning environment for the students of the district, and he has been willing to do whatever is necessary to further this goal. To this end, Mr. Salmons works well with the staff, parents, board of education, and community members to meet the educational needs of the district.

Because of his vested interest and alumni relationship with the Avenue City School District, he chose to raise his family in the district and dedicate years of volunteer service. As a father of four, Kevin has always been involved in their lives, supporting everything they are involved in. This involvement includes Athletic Booster Clubs, coaching, and volunteering to assist with events at school.

The school district and community are very fortunate to have Kevin Salmons as a member of the local school board. His commitment to the education of the Avenue City School District children and their future makes him deserving as the Outstanding Rural Board of Education member for 2004.
