Dear K – 4 Families,

I hope this letter finds you and your family feeling positive about your child’s school experience thus far.  We are now in the last trimester of the school year and are quickly approaching parent-teacher conferences.  If you have not taken the opportunity to sign up for your child’s conference, please do so.  These meetings are very important in the building of the relationship between home and school, but the most obvious end result is the communication that occurs regarding your child’s success in school.

We are currently enrolling kindergarteners for the 2008 – 2009 school year.  If you, or someone you know has a student that will be five prior to August 1st, please come into the office before the end of the month and enroll them in school.  It is very important that we have an accurate count early on for planning.  We are also accepting applications for the preschool program.  Students must be 4 prior to August 1.  We can only accept 30 students into the program.  Forms may be picked up in the office.  Also, we are still accepting referrals for our Parents as Teachers program.  This program is open to all families with children prenatal – to five years old.  It is an excellent free program and can benefit families from all backgrounds.  You may also contact the office for further information on this program.

Thanks to all of you that keep your child’s lunch/snack account paid in full.  The general rule is students with a negative balance are supposed to have a peanut butter sandwich and milk for lunch.  I have been somewhat loose with this policy because it is really hard to tell a five or six year old they have to eat peanut butter until their parents send money for their account.  However, we are getting to a point in the year in which I am going to have to start enforcing this rule.  If you are experiencing financial hardship, I will be glad to get you an application for the free and reduced lunch program.  This information remains completely confidential.

In the Today’s Father Newsletter  (August 2000), it suggested that in order to support children and their reading  we need to do the following:  read at least three days a week with your child; with younger readers, follow words with your finger from left to right as you read; read the books your child chooses, even if it’s the same book over and over; point out key words and explain words children don’t know; ask questions about the story and be ready to answer their questions, even if they interrupt; get a library card; turn off the T.V. and let your child see you reading; and give lots of encouragement.

Recently, your child came home with a “Rounding Up Good Character” t-shirt.  Mrs. Amelunke, our school counselor, worked with the following businesses/organizations to help provide one for each of our students:  Sonshine Graphics, LifeTouch Photography, Ashland Optimist Club, Southern Boone PTA, Boone County National Bank, and Peak Performance.   We want to thank each of them for their contributions.  Our students were thrilled to get the t-shirts, and I am sure will wear them with pride.

As always, please feel free to contact me with any concerns.  We want to make our school the best that it can be.   Together we can achieve that goal.

Sincerely,

Scott Salmons
