January 4, 2008

Dear Primary/Elementary Families,

Happy New Year!  It is almost inconceivable to me that we could be starting back to school in the year 2008.  I wish you the absolute best in the coming months and hope that all of your resolutions end with success.

Some of you may be focusing on healthy habits as your goal for this year.  This is a great time to get your entire family involved in the process.  Research shows that children are often more willing to eat healthy foods and be active if they see their parents and other family members doing these things first.  As a family you can set healthy, but realistic goals for eating healthier and being more physically active throughout the week.  Eating healthy dinners together not only models for children the importance of eating foods that are good for us, but it also provides time for family members to catch up and build strong relationships.  The same is true for planning some “play” time to just unwind with the kids and to have some fun while keeping everyone involved.

One of my favorite gifts this season was a book called, The Fred Factor by Mark Sanborn.  It is a quick read with valuable lessons for all of us to learn regarding the importance of our interactions and relationships with others.  While the focus is more centrally located around adults, there are many great thoughts that we as adults can model and instill in our children.  If you get the chance to pick it up, I promise that you will find it to be both inspiring and powerful in challenging you to live up to your personal best in your personal and professional lives.

I have just a couple of reminders to share with you.  Please make sure that your child’s lunch/snack account balance is kept up and paid.  If you need financial assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the office for a confidential application.  As the chance for inclement weather approaches us, please make sure that you tune into the local television channels and weather stations for updates on school closings.  If school needs to let out early, you can also find that on the district website.  It may also be a good idea to contact your child’s teacher with the latest information on what we need to do in case of such early dismissal.  Last but certainly not least, a couple of weeks ago before the winter break, a parent had her purse stolen out of her car while she was at one of the Parents as Teachers Drop in and Play sessions.  I want to remind you that the safety of our students and community members is a top priority with us.  If you notice anything or anyone acting slightly suspicious, please notify the office immediately so that we may check out the situation – better safe than sorry.

As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or suggestions for making our school even better.  Together we can create the top quality school!

Sincerely,

Scott Salmons
