"The Southern Boone Middle School was listed on the 2008 "top ten" list recently released by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Annually, DESE compiles a list of the 10 schools, sub-divided by size, with the highest percentage of students scoring proficient and advanced on each of the grade level tests for the Missouri Assessment Program.

In 2008, 68.1% of Southern Boone Middle School students scored proficient or advanced on the 8th grade science test, compared to a state average of 43.3%. The similarly-sized school which scored highest on 8th grade science in 2008 had 80.6% of its students scoring proficient and advanced.
