A Letter From Your Principal ~ Bob
Simpson
Dear Students,
As your principal this school year, I am looking forward to
an exciting school year. As I always do,
I am proud of our school and will continue to have high expectations for each
of my students this school year. I
believe that Southern Boone County R-1 Middle School is a great school because
we have great teachers and great students and because we are working together
to build a better future!
This handbook is a guideline for students and parents to
help them understand how we do things on a daily basis at Southern Boone County
Middle School. The purpose of these
policies, guidelines, and procedures is to ensure that we have a school that is
safe and orderly, and where we can concentrate on effective teaching and
learning. It is important that students
and parents familiarize themselves with the policies in this handbook to help
eliminate concerns during the school year.
Here at Southern Boone County R-1, it is our expectation
that our students will soar to be safe, responsible, and respectful
learners. These expectations permeate
our handbook and classrooms because we understand that they lead to a safer,
more productive learning climate for everyone.
Remember, your feelings toward your school are not
determined only by what your school gives you, but also by what you give back
to your school. When we show authentic
enthusiasm and participate in school programs, we make our school a better
place. More than that, it influences us
in how we feel about our school in a more positive manner.
With Respect!
Bob Simpson,
Middle School Principal

PROCEDURES
HOMEWORK HOTLINE: To receive the day’s homework
please dial 657-2146 followed by the team extension as follows: 6th
grade 1360, 7th grade 1370, and 8th grade: 1380. It is also found on the middle school webpage
each night after
A toll-free number has been established to assist the district in
providing a safe school environment.
This service is designed to allow parents and students an opportunity to
anonymously report information. Any information,
which could negatively impact our school, our students, or our staff, should be
reported. Examples of possible reports
could include but not be limited to the following: violence, theft, drugs or alcohol, and weapon possession. We need your assistance to maintain our safe
school.
LOCKERS
School lockers and desks are the property of Southern Boone County
Schools and the Board of Education and are provided for the convenience of
students, and as such, are subject to periodic inspection without notice. This inspection will be conducted by the
principal, faculty, or other designated school personnel. Information concerning lockers will be kept
in the main office. Damaged lockers may
result in assessing the student for reimbursement. Appropriateness of locker decorations will
rest with the administration.
Students should avoid keeping valuables in lockers and should keep
their lockers locked at all times. Dial
locks are provided for each locker.
Students should not give their combination to anyone other than a parent. Students are to utilize their locker during
the four (4) minute time period between classes and not during the class
period. Only signs and items approved by the principal may be displayed on the
exterior of student lockers.
ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Students are reminded that they bring electronic devices to school at
their own risk. These items include cell
phones, MP3 players, etc … These items are costly and are easily lost, stolen,
or damaged. Cell phones are not to be
seen or heard during the school day. If
these items interfere with the learning environment, they may be
confiscated. First offenses will be
returned to the student at the end of the day.
Further infractions may require parents retrieving these items.
SAFETY & Emergency Drills
Safety is a matter of concern for all individuals in the school
building. All public buildings are
required to provide regulations and procedures to follow in case of any
disaster. Each teacher will have a copy
of safety regulations that will include directions and procedures to follow in
case of emergency. Fire drills and
severe weather drills will be conducted during school time. Two earthquake drills will be held annually.
Halls are designed to provide access to and from various areas of the
building. Students are expected to stay
to the right while going to and from their classes. Congregating and /or aimless wandering in the
halls, library and other areas will not be permitted. No student is to be in the halls during
the regular periods without a hall pass.
Students found in the halls during class time will be viewed as out of
their assigned area and may be subject to disciplinary action.
LUNCH
Lunchroom is a supervised time for eating. Therefore, the following regulations have
been written so the cafeteria will be supervised in a consistent manner.
1. Students are to maintain an orderly
lunch line.
2. Students are to keep the noise level
to a minimum and wait for dismissal.
3. Students are to bus their own trays
and silverware and clean up their eating area.
4. Students are to return to their
respective seats at the tables after the trays have been turned in.
DRESS CODE
All students should at all times during the school hours be dressed and
groomed in a manner that is in keeping with community standards. Students should dress appropriate to the
occasion for activities outside school hours.
Positive attitudes toward dress have always centered on cleanliness,
neatness, and decency. While most
students dress appropriately, some do need some guidance. The following rules for inappropriate and
non-permissible attire are set forth:
Students must wear shoes but we ask that studded-sole all-purpose shoes
are not to be worn. Students
may NOT wear hats, headgear, chains, straps,
bandanas, sunglasses, bare midriff, halters or revealing clothing. Any clothing
that displays a tobacco or alcohol logo, gang related attire, or sexual
connotation is also prohibited. The decision as to the appropriateness of
the student’s dress shall rest with the administration. Special clothing
days may occur and will be announced in advance. Coats,
hats, jackets and backpacks are to be left in lockers during the school day.
STUDENT ATTENDANCE
All students are expected to attend school each day school is in
session unless he or she is excused from school for one of the following
reasons: Excused absences are strictly for the purpose of allowing a student to
makeup missed work for full credit.
EXCUSED ABSENCES
1. Death in the family.
2. Illness of the
student.
3. Other special cases
specifically approved in advance by the building principal.
ABSENCES
If the student should miss school for any reason not covered under
excused absences, the absence shall be considered unexcused, and he/she may not
be allowed to makeup work. All total absences (excused or unexcused) are
subject to the following procedures:
At or after first (5) absences
for any reason, the parent shall receive a letter from the school notifying
them of the student’s absences.
At or after ten (10) absences,
parent shall receive a letter and/or a phone call from the principal notifying
them of the student’s absences and reminding them of the attendance policy.
At and after fifteen (15)
absences from school, the parent will receive a letter from the principal
notifying them of his actions and referring the student to the Juvenile Office
to request a review of the child’s truancy.
This will include all excused
and unexcused absences. Any such determination for truancy will be made
by the Boone County Juvenile Office. Family Vacations during the school year
are also included. Each additional five (5) absences will again be referred to
the Juvenile Office for consideration of truancy.
NOTIFICATION OF ABSENCES
1. The parents or guardians of students who are absent on any given day must
call and notify the school of such absences. Students who are absent will not be
readmitted to the school until such telephone call is received.
2. It is the student’s responsibility to
present their absentee slip to the teacher and make up their work. Any student with an office excused absence
will be permitted to make up all work missed.
If work is not made up as designated, the
appropriate grade will be recorded.
3. No student is to leave school without
first coming to the principal’s office for a dismissal slip. In case of illness, parents will be called
before a student will be permitted to go home.
4. Students must be in school the day of
an activity before they will be allowed to participate in, or attend such
activity. In cases in which the absence
is prearranged and approved in the principal’s office, the student may be
allowed to participate in scheduled school activities.
5. A student will receive a zero for each
day that is unexcused.
EARLY DEPARTURE FROM SCHOOL
Once students arrive at school, they must remain on campus until
dismissal time unless they obtain parental consent to leave early. Any consent must be approved by the building
principal in advance. Students should not be released to
another student, even though there may be a written note or phone call from
parent or guardian. Any
exceptions must be approved by the administration.
TARDIES
Students LATE TO SCHOOL must have a parent or adult
(not siblings or other students) sign them in at the school office. These count
in the overall tardy count. It is extremely disruptive when students do not get
to class on time. Each student must
accept the responsibility for seeing that he or she is not tardy. A student who is not in
his/her seat when the tardy bell rings, is considered to be tardy. Adequate time to exchange classes is
provided. At no time shall a student be
permitted to enter a class after the tardy bell has rung, without first
obtaining a pass from the principal’s office.
A record shall be kept in the office of all student tardies. Four (4) tardies by
a student will result in a student/principal conference. Six (6) tardies
will result in an after school detention and a principal/parent contact by
letter. Ten (10) tardies will result in a Saturday
detention or In School Suspension and an additional letter to the parent. Each additional 5 tardies
will be another Saturday detention or In School Suspension. Tardies in excess
of 25 a semester will require a Parent/Principal Conference regarding why the
child is consistently tardy.
SCHOOL VISITORS
Students and staff are not permitted to have visitors at school unless
they obtain permission from the principal in advance. Anyone (including parents) visiting Southern
Boone County R-I Schools must wear a visitor’s pass. This must be obtained from the building
principal’s office. All visitors will be required to check in and out each day.
INTERRUPTION OF CLASSES IN SESSION
Interruption during classroom instruction interferes with the learning
process. With this in mind, it seems
desirable that these disruptions should be kept to a minimum. In extreme situations where it is necessary
to interrupt a teacher during class time, the person who wishes to contact a
particular teacher must first clear through the principal’s office. We discourage routine messages. Please
make plans with your child before or after school.
TO CONTACT A STUDENT
If there is a need to get an emergency message to a student,
call the building level office and efforts will be made to contact the
student. To restrict interruptions to
class, messages will be delivered at the end of the school day unless
extenuating circumstances exist.
TELEPHONE CALLS
Students who need to make telephone calls during the day must
use the pay phone between classes and not during class. Phone
calls should be limited to 3 minutes. Students
will not be called from class to accept a phone call unless it is an emergency. Students may use the office phone with prior
permission. Non-emergency messages can
be delivered from the principal’s office at the end of the day, time
permitting. During the day phone calls are not transferred to teachers. Messages will be forwarded to their voice
mail only. Teacher conference periods
may be secured by contacting the middle school office.
VIDEOTAPING OF CLASSROOMS
Videotaping of a classroom by a teacher can be done without notification of the
students or parents if the taping will be used for educational purposes. Administration and teachers may use
videotaping equipment to monitor class, to improve teaching or to evaluate the
educational process in the classroom.
Unauthorized videotaping of students by outside entities is not
permitted.
MENTOR/VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
Volunteer opportunities are available.
These range from working with children in the classroom on a regularly
scheduled basis to being available for special projects when needed. Volunteering in the district is a privilege,
not a right. The district will conduct
screening and criminal background checks before any volunteer is placed in a
position where he/she is left alone with a student. The district may decline the services of any
volunteer for any legal reason. All
information collected on volunteers will be considered confidential to the
extent allowed by law and will only be used to protect students or minimize
disruption to the educational environment.
SCHOOL PROPERTY
All school property including, furniture, lockers, equipment, library
and textbooks are the property of the school and subject to repair
reimbursement or replacement. A schedule of replacement costs will be made
available for items from the principal.
II. ADMISSIONS,
TRANSFERS, & WITHDRAWALS
ENROLLMENT
New students to Southern Boone County Schools are to provide the
following before they are enrolled
for classes:
1. Proof of residence of parent or guardian in
the school district.
2. Birth certificate.
3. Updated immunizations that are current under
the Missouri State Law.
4. Previous school records for academics, special
education, and discipline.
Completed enrollment forms including
addresses and phone number for emergency contacts and previous school for
academic records.
5.
Southern Boone
County R-1 School District may contact the previous school district to verify
disciplinary or other necessary history.
STUDENT IMMUNIZATIONS
To attend school, immunizations must be complete as required by the
Missouri Department of Health. This
shall not apply to any child if one parent or guardian objects on religious
grounds in writing to the school administration to the immunization of the
child. Students not in compliance may be
suspended from school for failure to comply.
SCHOOL RECORDS
Disclosure of information (other than Directory Information) from a
student’s records will be made only with the written consent of the parent or
eligible student. The only exceptions
will be to school officials or law enforcement personnel with legitimate
interest and cause (i.e. administrator, instructor, teacher, and support staff
member or school health medical personnel).
All school student records will be forwarded only after receiving
signed permission of the parents or guardians to transfer the information to
another school district, professional person or designated agency.
