The Internet and especially applications such as the World-Wide Web have created an electronic environment with rich educational potential. Many states including Missouri have initiated programs to promote access to the Internet and provide educators with basic training about Internet capabilities. Several organizations in Missouri have worked together to connect every Missouri School District to the Internet: The Missouri Research and Education Network (MOREnet) and The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (MO DESE) Many schools, including several in Missouri, are moving beyond access issues and exploring how the Internet can be an instructional environment. But to build an effective electronic instructional environment on the Web schools need not only Internet access but also server support. Schools need to be able to search and retrieve information on the Web, but they also need to be able to create and publish on the Web. They need the capability to organize their own workspace on the Web. Most schools will build their own servers with both local equipment and local technical support. Some schools do not yet have either the material or human resources required to sustain a server even though they have students, teachers and others ready to build local educational applications. The Missouri School Web Project is for just such schools.
